From Troop 850 in Stafford, Virginia:
Greetings to Scouts in Iceland

I am a Boy Scout in Troop 850 in Stafford, Virginia. We are located about 40 miles south of Washington, DC. Quantico Marine Corps Base is to our north and the Rappahannock River and the city of Fredericksburg is to the south.

Troop 850 meets every Tuesday at 7:30 P.M. We go camping about once a month. I am currently the Troop Librarian am also a member of the Order of the Arrow. I am a Life Scout and have 45 merit badges.

I am 13 years old and in the 7th Grade. I go to a middle school which is for the 6th, 7th, and 8th grade. I play the trombone in the school pep band. We play at all of the home sports games. I am going to join the wrestling team.

My uncle was an instructor at a NATO electronics school in Italy and visited an Air Force base in Iceland once. He gave me a lot of coins from Iceland and I am using some of them for the Coin Collecting Merit Badge. He visited during the month of January and said that Iceland was not as cold as he thought it would be.

From Stafford, Virginia:
Hello, My name is John. I am in troop 42. I'm a Tenderfoot from Stafford, Virginia. We are located between Washington, DC and Richmond, Virginia. Stafford County is probably best know as the boyhood home of George Washington. It is also from where the Union Army crossed the Rappahannock River and attacked the Confederates in Fredericksburg during the American Civil War in 1862 and 1863.

At the age of 10, I saved my mother's life. Here is my story:

While on a school field trip to Jamestown, Virginia. My mom became dizzy and sick to her stomach. She was suffering from low blood sugar brought on by a very hot day after going too long without eating. Her Tenderfoot Scout son, recognized the symptoms and immediately came to her assistance. I took the injection kit from my mothers purse and gave her a shot and candy to eat.

I continued to care for her until the ambulance arrived to transport her to the hospital. I received a certificate of merit award from the National Capital Area Council.

Please respond to my e-mail by Sunday, October 18, 1998.

Sincerely,

John Strother - johnson_ca@hotmail.com

From Marlborough in New Zealand:

Hi, my name is Andrew. I go to Churchward Park Scout group, Marlborough, New Zealand. At the moment we are learning about survival. What are you learning about?

We went to deep creek camp and had a lot of fun. We stayed for two nights. One of my friends, Josh climbed up a tree and found a possum. Possums are a species that has been introduced into New Zealand from Australia, they are a real pest here. Josh whacked the possum on the head with a stick. The possum survived, so did Josh. We are going on another camp soon on the 6th to the 8th of November 1998. Senior Cubs are allowed to go on a camp at Kaiteriteri Beach.

Bye for now

From St. Bruno, Province of Quebec, Canada:
Hello All,

Hope you enjoy JOTI/JOTA.

I have a Cub and a Beaver as sons and I am a Cub Leader in the Cayuga Cub Pack. My wife is a new Spark Leader and goes with our daughter aged 5. The Cubs have 26 boys and about 7 Leaders.

We are in a medium-sized town in the Province of Quebec which is on the Eastern side of Canada. Most of the province's 7 million people are French- speaking although, in the main cities like Montreal and Quebec City, many also speak English. There is a large multi-cultural population in Montreal which is about 20 minutes drive away.

The 1 st Bruno Scouts Association is mainly an english-speaking organisation but many of the children, including mine, are bilingual. The leaders are too except me, I struggle a bit!

We just had a Cub camp which we all enjoyed the weekend before last. We fired rockets, built camp gadgets, made giant water-balloon catapults, campfires etc.. We all had fun. The Cubs all wanted to wash-up and cook!! Unusual eh?! We are just at the beginning of our years programs and are still sorting out many ideas. If you have any good ones - let me know.

Bye for now. Maybe catch you on the radio for JOTA as VE2VTS. I just finished putting my antennas up in the back garden.

Enjoy JOTI!

Hi my name is Josh. I am in troop 42, which is stationed in Stafford County, where I live. The county I live in is medium size. It is mostly farm land. Stafford is in the state of Virginia. Virginia is a historical place. Washington D.C. (our National capital) borders Virginia. Virginia was one of the 13 colonies back in the 1700's.

Gorge Washington lived here,at one time. Virginia's state bird is the cardinal. Our state flag is blue with a circular symbol in the middle of it. Please write back and tell me about your area.

From Scout Skiing Club Cracow, Poland:
Hi everybody!

Hope you enjoy JOTI as much as we do! We are from Harcerski Klub Narciarski Krakow (Scout Skiing Club Cracow) from Poland. There are 5 troops in the club:
Cub Scouts 'Lawinki' = 'Avalanches' ,
Brownies 'Wesole Sniezynki' = 'Happy Snowflakes',
Giudes 'Limby' = 'Stone Pines' ,
Scouts and Rovers/Rangers 'Modrzewie' = 'Larches'

We're focused on skiing. Each winter we organise Mistrostwa ZHP w Narciarstwie Zjazdowym (Polish Scouting and Guiding Association Championships in Downhill Skiing.) We hope to invite some scouts form other countries this year (especially from Slovakia and Czech Republic).

We also do some sailing, we like MTBs (there's also a bike section in our club called 'Avanti'), we like hihhing and backpacking.

We met loads of scouts last year, and we want to make more contacts this tme.

The Polish Scouting and Guiding Association

The Polish Scouting and Guiding Association (ZHP) is the Polish national organisation of Scouts and Guides, member of the World Organization of the Scout Movement (WOSM) and the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts (WAGGGS).

Polish Scouting and Guiding started in 1910 when Poland was still partitioned between three neighbouring countries. ZHP was formally established in 1918 just after Poland had again become an independent country. In the 1920s the association was a founder member of WOSM and WAGGGS. When World War II broke out ZHP did not suspend its activity but became an underground movement continuing its educational mission with the additional aim of defending the country. After the war, and as a result of political changes, ZHP lost its membership in WOSM and WAGGGS but regained it in 1996.

The ZHP of today is a modern Scout and Guide national organisation with over 400,000 members, open to everyone regardless of origin, race or creed. Education in ZHP is based upon the moral norms derived from universal cultural and ethical values of Christianity.

The Scouting and Guiding educational values are specified in the Scout and Guide Promise:

"It is my sincere wish to serve God and Poland with the whole of my life, to give my willing help to other people, and to obey the Scout and Guide Law."

The symbols of our ideals are the Cub Scout/Brownie Badge and the Scout and Guide Cross.

There are 3 age groups in ZHP:
- Cub Scouts and Brownies, in Polish: zuchy (7-11 years) - play in their packs,
- Scouts and Guides, in Polish: harcerze i harcerki (11-15 years) - learn about the world and people through games and fun,
- Rovers and Rangers, in Polish: harcerze i harcerki starsze (over 15 years) - look for their place in life through hiking and helping others.

ZHP is active all over Poland. The basic unit of ZHP is a Troop, consisting of 20-30 people on average. Troops from a village, town or town quarter make up a District. Districts operating within a specified area of Poland constitute a Region. The highest authority of ZHP is the Congress, which meets every 4 years. The Congress elects the President and the Chief Scout of ZHP.

The Honorary Protector of ZHP is the President of the Republic of Poland.

Yours in scouting

From Arroyo Grande, California, USA:
Hello,

My name is Matthew Monson. I am 13 years old. I live in Oceano, California. If you can’t find that on the map, look for San Luis Obispo. My rank is a first class scout. I enjoy backpacking, hiking, and various other activities. My troop number is 26. That troop is in Arroyo Grande, California. My whole troop is not participating in JOTI. I am the only on that showed up.

Recently my troop went on a Sierra Backpacking trip in the Sierraa Nevada mountains. It was foggy and cold. In about a year me and a group of other scouts are going to Philmont Scout Ranch in Cimmaron, New Mexico. It is a high adventure camp for Scouts who enjoy backpacking in the mountains. I am looking forward to it. I hope you have a great time doing this. I know I am.

See, Ya!!
